《哈罗德品特戏剧话语里沉默现象的语用文体学研究》为揭开这两个问题的谜底,先将研究的矛头探入沉默的本质,证实沉默是人类话语交际中有机、动态、不可或缺的组成部分,并厘清沉默和言语、沉默和其它语言成份的关系。接下来,《哈罗德品特戏剧话语里沉默现象的语用文体学研究》依照品特本人的观点、将其戏剧中的沉默分成两大类别:静默和语境沉默b为了探究沉默在品特戏剧文本中所发挥的功能和作用,它被视为一种语用行为:在两个层面的交际中发挥着重要功能:一个是剧本内部的,剧中人物之间的微观语境的交际;一个是延伸到剧本外部、涵盖社会文化语境、从作者到受众的宏观语境的交流。
